Peru 2019


October 21-November 1, 2019

Last year I had the opportunity to tour Peru on a fiber trip organized by Jim Petkiewicz. I was totally enthralled by the landscape and the colors and the people I met there! Peru has a deep and complex textile tradition that offers a lifetime of inspiration.

Jim and I are offering the Peru trip again in 2019. We’ve combined the things I loved best with the deep knowledge he has of the country to make an itinerary that brings traditional and modern Peru to our travelers: natural dye class at the Center for Traditional Textiles; an 8-course meal at Mil, emphasizing traditional, local foods in a modern setting; Machu Picchu, which is as awesome in person as you might imagine; a trip into the Andes to visit the weavers, spinners, and dyers in a small village; and much more.

Here’s our itinerary (subject to change as new possibilities present themselves!):

21 Oct:
Group arrives on various flights into Cusco.
Our great friend, agronomist & guide Melky will welcome & transport you from the airport to El Balcón, our charming family-run hotel near the historic center of Cusco.
Settle into your room, drink fluids, eat lightly & adjust to the new altitude.
Sleep well & deeply after your long journey!

22 Oct:
Breakfast, as always, included. The hotel offers a choice of hot dishes as well as yogurt, granola, fruits, juices, and coffee and tea.
We will have group introductions and knitting lessons at El Balcón after breakfast.
This will be an easy day—take deep breaths, take life slowly.
Stroll to La Plaza de Armas and get a feel for the historic center of town.
Welcome dinner at Chicha by Gaston Acurio—ranked #39 chef in the world and godfather of the modern Peruvian cuisine renaissance.

23 Oct:
Knitting after breakfast.
Then we will have a cooking class at El Balcón, including a trip to the mercado.
Free evening.

24 Oct:
Travel to Chinchero for an all-day natural dyeing workshop with our friends at the amazing Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco/Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco.  Lunch included.

25 Oct:
Depart for Ollantaytambo.
Visit the Salinas de Maras, salt flats/ponds dating back to pre-Columbian times.
Visit the fascinating Moray Incan archaeological site.
8-course meal at Mil by Virgilio Martínez—ranked #6 chef in the world and creator of altitude-based local dishes. This meal will leave your senses reeling!
Late afternoon arrival at our intimate and relaxing hotel, El Albuergue, in Ollantaytambo. You won’t be wanting dinner!

26 Oct:
Guided tour of the hotel’s organic farm and nearby coffee & pisco companies.
Free time to explore Ollantaytambo.

27 Oct:
Early morning departure for Machu Picchu with professional guide, including a bountiful buffet lunch in Aguas Calientes. You’ll ride the train, then transfer to a bus to travel the switchback road up to the entrance to Machu Picchu—hike up the short trail, take a turn, and then it all comes into view. . . 

28 Oct:
Free day for exploration on your own. Ollantaytambo is described as a living Inca town—there’s lots to see here! 

29 Oct:
Depart for all-day workshop high in the Andes with residents of a small village, organized by Awamaki Peru. Lunch is included. Bring your cash for amazing textile purchases, while simultaneously helping the community!

30 Oct:
Back to Cusco, with a stop in Chinchero to view the Inca ruins and the Colonial church.
Free afternoon & evening in Cusco.

31 Oct:
4-6 hour tour with Melky to Sacsayhuamán, the Sacred Valley, and the remarkable painted church of Andahuaylillas. Box lunch included.
Tonight we’ll have our farewell meal together at a local restaurant.

1 Nov:
Departure day for the group. Melky will take you back to the airport.
