Description
So you want to learn how to knit a Fair Isle garment? This cap, with its traditional Fair Isle geometric motifs knit in the round on a 16″ needle, is the perfect introduction to Fair Isle colorwork. Simple geometric motifs without any long floats offer a chance to practice two-color techniques. Peerie bands (small bands) and an OXO (the large band) offer opportunities to try out traditional color uses such as pop colors and value gradients, but there are lots of rounds with only one color to make the project go quickly.
The pattern is written for four colorways of Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift fingering weight yarn: Blue, Raspberry, Natural, and Green (Blue and Green shown above). The adventurous knitter can easily substitute colors.
The knitter who is new to stranded knitting might have trouble establishing gauge; therefore, this pattern is written to be flexible. A tighter gauge results in a close-fitting hat, while a looser gauge gives it a slouchy profile: either way it will fit someone!
